Abstract: Anchors for exterior dimension stone can be categorized by four types: for general cladding applications, for precast concrete backings, for repair, and for liners.FOR GENERAL CLADDINGThe basic types of anchors for general cladding applications are strap, rod, tooled rod, adhesive embedded, disk, and wire anchors. Strap anchors are flat bars designed to fit into slots or kerfs cut in the stone's top, bottom, or sides, or a combination of these. Rod anchors are round bars or dowels that fit into holes drilled in the edges of the stone. Tooled rod anchors are round bars having a tooled shape at one or both ends that fits into a matching hole in the stone. Included in this category is the rod and plug anchor. Adhesive embedded anchors are rods or bars that are bonded into angled holes in the stone. The holes are filled with epoxy or polyester resin. Disk anchors are rod anchors having a round, square, or rectangular plate attached to the end of the rod perpendicularly. The plate is embedded into a slot in the stone and the rod is attached to the support structure. Wire anchors generally should be used for low-rise buildings where design loads and performance are limited to the capacity of the anchors.FOR PRECAST CONCRETE BACKINGSTwo common ways of attaching dimension stone to precast concrete backing are dowels and hairpin anchors.
