Fertility Tips

If you are having a hard time conceiving, you are not alone, infertility strikes one out of every six couples. If you are under the age of 35 and have been trying to have a baby for more than a year, then, it's time to see a doctor to evaluate why you haven't been able to conceive.

If you are over 35 or if you've already had a child, and you've been trying for six months to get pregnant, but can't then you need to see your doctor. If you or your mate have experienced any kind of medical condition that would impair your ability to conceive then you should consult with a fertility specialist.

If you see a fertility specialist he or she will want to do an in depth exam as well as a history to gain insight as to what may be causing your infertility. By just talking with you, your doctor may discover problems that he/she may not have learned about otherwise.

Reasons for infertility

For a man, one of the top reasons for infertility:

• Low sperm count

• Sperm motility

• Sperm size and shape

For a woman, the top reasons for infertility:

• Irregular menstrual cycles

• Hormonal imbalances

• Blocked tubes

• Excessive scar tissue

When it comes to infertility, the playing field is level, it is problem that is equal - just as many men as women have fertility problems. And there are a variety of treatments.

Treatments

Once your doctor completes a medical exam including a fertility workup, a course of treatment will be addressed. Treatments may include prescription medications, blood testing, a semen analysis, and even surgery. If you are seeing an obstetrician, he or she may refer you to a fertility specialist.
