You’ve finally decided to break down and replace the old flooring in your home; or, you’ve reached that exciting finish point of your addition or remodel. Initially, you may be concerned that “eco-friendly” means more expensive, or is somehow less attractive than conventional carpets. You may be pleasantly surprised at what materials are considered eco-friendly, and how affordable they actually are.
Wood
A durable and beautiful option, wood can also be eco-friendly if certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). One of the more expensive materials available, wood is a popular and timeless choice.
Bamboo Grass
A renewable resource, bamboo grass is a great choice for flooring. Although bamboo is grown with minimum pesticides and fertilizers, be cautious of products that use formaldehyde for bonding.
Linoleum
Although typically not the choice for whole-house flooring, linoleum is an inexpensive, soft, durable, and easy-to-clean choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Many attractive designs are now available. Linoleum is a biodegradable material and can be glued with natural glues.
Cork
Another renewable resource, cork flooring is created from the bark off of cork trees and is a popular choice as well.
